Macrame Decoration

Coralie Sanabria

Project: Macrame Decoration (Ideal gift for mom on her day!)

Materials:

Instructions:

(We recommend watching each step in the video as you read the instructions so you can better understand the entire process.)

1. Cut 4 pieces of yarn 50 inches long and 1 piece 20 inches long.

2. Secure the "snap hook" to the edge of the macrame board so that your project doesn't move while you work the knots.

3. Make a Lark's Head Knot with all the long strands to attach them to the Snap Hook. To make the Lark's Head Knot, fold the strand in half, pass it through the metal piece from bottom to top, and then pass the remaining strand through the loop you created.

4. Arrange all the threads neatly so they are in order. (See Diagram #1)

♥ Tip: In macrame projects, it's extremely important to maintain order to follow the pattern correctly. As you make the knots, the threads will change order. Make sure to keep them in the position where they naturally fall, that is, not overlapping each other. If it's easier for you, you can secure the threads to the edge of the macrame board, leaving only the threads you'll be working with loose.

5. The knot we will be working with throughout this project is called the Double Diagonal Lark's Head Knot . Count thread #4 from left to right. Hold it in your left hand, and with your right hand, take the 3rd thread. Pass it around the thread you are holding in your right hand, and passing it through the loop you created, pull it to the right side, closing the knot until you reach the top. Repeat this process with the same threads to finish the double knot, without letting go of the thread in your left hand. (See Diagram #2)

6. Keep holding the thread in your left hand and repeat the double knot, this time with the 2nd thread, and then with the 1st.

7. Rearrange the threads, making sure they are in order. (See Diagram #3)

8. Repeat the process, this time in reverse. Count the 5th thread from left to right and hold it with your right hand. Without letting go, tie the knot with the 6th thread using your left hand.

9. Keep holding the thread in your right hand and repeat the double knot with the 7th and 8th threads. This completes the first row of knots.

10. Repeat the same process, this time starting with the 5th thread in your left hand, and making the knot with the 4th thread.

11. Without letting go of the thread in your left hand, repeat the double knot with the 3rd and 2nd threads. The 1st thread will remain outside, without a knot.

12. Rearrange all the threads so they are in order.

13. Count thread #5 from left to right and hold it with your right hand. With your left hand, make the knots, starting with the 6th thread, and then the 7th. The 8th will remain outside, without a knot.

14. Unlike the previous knots, in this step we will skip a thread. Hold thread #2 with your right hand, and make a double knot with the 4th thread with your left hand. Then, make a double knot with the 3rd thread that we skipped.

15. Hold thread #1 with your right hand, and make the double knot with the 2nd thread with your left hand, and repeat with the 3rd thread.

16. Repeat the steps in reverse on the other side of the project.

17. To close the center gap, tie a knot with the 4th and 5th threads. Cross them by passing the 5th thread under the 4th, and then through it. Tighten the knot firmly, and make a lark's head knot with these same threads. Without letting go of the right-hand thread, make a double lark's head knot with the next threads on the right side.

18. The next double lark's head knot will be with the 3rd and 4th threads, holding the 3rd with your right hand. Repeat with the next threads on the right side, leaving the last one out.

19. Make a double blanket knot with the 2nd and 3rd threads, holding the 3rd thread with your left hand, and continuing with another double knot with the 1st thread.

20. The next knot will be with the 4th thread and the 3rd thread, holding the 4th with the left hand, and without letting go, repeat with the 2nd. The 1st thread will remain outside, without a knot.

21. The design is now complete. Now use the 20-inch piece of yarn to finish the project. Fold the yarn over with the end facing up, and wrap the project with the remaining yarn at least 3 times.

22. Pass the end down through the loop you created, and pull the other end up, so that the knot is tightened and hidden.

23. Cut off any excess from the top end.

24. To finish the project, cut the ends of all the threads, shaping them as desired, and comb them with your fingers to open them up.

♥ Tip: You can use a comb or wire brush to open the ends of the threads.

♥ Tip: If you want to adjust the size of your project, you can use a thicker or thinner yarn, choosing the size of the snap hook or base you'll be using according to the yarn thickness. You can also make this same design longer by repeating the steps to complete the pattern.

♥ Tip: Add other details like charms or pendants using a jump ring. The one we used in the video would be perfect as a little gift for Mother's Day, which is just around the corner.
